First House (Tanu Bhava):
Tanu means the body. Hence the first house is the individual himself. It is the rising sign and hence known as the lagna bhava too. Since it rises, it denotes the head, hence it called the shirsha bhava. It is the one in which a person is born, and so it is the janma bhava. It defines the present moment and the orientation of the present time, hence it is known as the vartaman bhava.
The lagna bhava is the first bhava and hence it represents the first of everything. The universe exists because of the person, a person’s knowledge and experience of the outside world is what the universe is. Hence the lagna bhava primarily signifies the person him/herself. The first part of the body that comes out during birth in a normal delivery is the head, hence the lagna governs the head. The first phase of the birth is childhood, hence the lagna is also the house for the initial years. The lagna similarly is also the place of birth of a person, the house of residence of a person, the hair of the person. The appearance or the things visible in the first impression of the person are also the lagna bhava. It is the overall life and overall being of the person.
Second House (Dhan Bhava):
Dhan means wealth and it is the possessions that is governed by this house. The first thing a child possess after birth is his family, hence it is the kutumba bhava. In his own journey of life, his wealth is his knowledge and learning hence it is the vidya bhava. In social life, a man’s wealth is money, hence the 2nd house is money, hence vitta bhava. For survival, the wealth is food, hence the bhukti bhava. The senses are the wealth through which we know the surroundings. Hence, the 2nd house is the nayana bhava (eyes) and the vaak bhava (speech). The purpose of Wealth of any kind is to deliver happiness, hence the mangalya bhava. The dhan bhava represents the next part of life wherein the person grows as a toddler and amasses securities. The second house is also the face, eyes, etc.
Third House (Sahaj Bhava):
Sahaj means natural. That which comes naturally is represented by the sahaj bhava. After the birth of a person, the siblings are born; hence it is the sahodara bhava. The first instinct of survival is courage to face adversities, hence it is the parakrama bhava. The natural character of civilization and society is communication, hence the third house is the house of communication. It represents the next body part below neck, i.e. the shoulders.
Fourth House (Bandhu Bhava):
Bandhu basically means that which is bound to you. Whatever is associated with you for ever is known as Bandhu bhava. A mother is the first one physically bound to the child through the umblical cord. Hence, the fourth house is the matru bhava. Your house is bound to you and your vehicle is bound to you because you use them on a daily basis. Hence, it is called the veshma bhava and vaahan bhava. Your learning is the next thing bound to you. While knowledge can be replicated, your own learning and experience is yours and yours alone which can never be replicated. Hence, Vidya bhava. While the 2nd house is primary education, the 4th is education throughout teenage. It represents the chest region and the heart.
Fifth House (Putra Bhava):
The Putra bhava is the house of the product. Your offsprings are your product, hence the 5th house is the house of children. Your wisdom is your product, hence the budhi bhava. Patience is your product, hence the Vivek bhava. Love is your product, hence the prem bhava. It represents the stomach area.
Sixth House (Ari Bhava):
Ari means enemies and hence the 6th house is the house of all your enemies. Debt is the enemy to your wealth, hence it is the Rina bhava. Your opponents are the enemies to your growth, hence it is the Shatru Bhava. Diseases are the enemies to your longevity, hence it is the Ripu bhava. Fear is the enemy to your mind, hence it is the Sheeti Bhava. Obstacles are the enemies to your progress, hence it is the Vighna bhava. It denotes the lower abdomen area.
Seventh House (Yuvati Bhava):
This house is the house of your partner. For a man, it is the house of his wife and so it is called the bharya bhava. For a girl it is the house of her husband and called the bhartr bhava. It is the house of your partner, hence it is known as the jamitra bhava. It is also the reason for needing a partner in life, hence kama bhava. It is also the house of all kinds of partnerships including business partnership. It denotes the sexual organs.
Eighth House (Randhr Bhava):
Randhr means a hole or an aperture. It is the opening through which something can be seen and the length of its experience. It also means that which is hidden and that which is vulnerable. The length of your life is your age, hence Ayush bhava. It is all sorts of hidden wealth, hidden enemies, etc. hence boohya bhava. Sorrows and griefs are your vulnerabilities, hence the dukha bhava. It denotes the rectum and excretory region.
Ninth House (Dharma Bhava):
Dharma is not about religion. It literally translates to virtue. All those attributes that you possess which help towards self development and moral/spiritual growth are called Dharma. The first element of dharma is your teacher/mentor, hence the Guru Bhava. The first teacher in life is Father, hence Pitru Bhava. Auspiciousness and luck are the essential virtues for any form of growth, hence the subha bhava. Penance is the next virtue, hence tapas bhava. Destiny is the foremost indicator of dharma. Sanskaar from past lives, form the virtues for the present life. Hence, bhaagya bhava. It governs the thighs.
Tenth House (Karma Bhava):
Karma means actions or all the involvements that you undertake on your own. While most actions one takes is obligatory, some are free-willed as well. Your first action is sustenance or livelihood, hence Karma Bhava. Your karma is to follow orders of those above you, hence aagya bhava. All action are done in aspiration to attain something, hence aspad bhava. All actions are aimed towards admiration, hence Kirti Bhava. All actions are conducts, hence achara bhava. Actions done without selfish intents are sacrifices, hence Kratu bhava. It governs the knee region.
Eleventh House (Labh Bhava):
Labha is all the gains that you can get in your life. The first thing you gain is money for sustenance, hence aaya bhava. You gain friends in life, hence Bandhu bhava. You have already gained elder siblings at birth, hence bhratru bhava. You gain what you desire, hence siddhi bhava. You gain wealth, hence vaibhava bhava. It denotes the leg below the knees.
Twelfth House (Vyaya Bhava):
It is all the things that you lose and with which losses are related. First thing to lose is of course wealth, hence it is the Vyaya Bhava. You can lose your position and standing in life, hence Kshaya bhava. You can lose your family and home and go to a foreign land, hence Vigam bhava. You can lose your own life and longevity, hence Vinash bhava. You can lose materialism, hence Moksha Bhava. It governs the feet and the sole area.
